SECOND FLOOR REMODEL & KITCHEN RENOVATION

PORTLAND OREGON • ALAMEDA

Our client wanted help with their newly acquired Alameda bungalow. The existing second floor was a converted attic comprised of a bedroom and bathroom and a bit of storage. While the existing bathroom was spacious enough it was out of date and lacked storage, they wanted something more. In our initial visit we quickly realized that the space at the top of the stairs was difficult to access and mostly unusable as well although the bedroom was functional enough.

The solution quickly became the addition of a long shed dormer facing the driveway on the north side of the home. The dormer added only 102 square feet but functionally it allowed the second floor to live like a home rather than an attic. Ultimately we remodel the outdated bathroom, created a new dressing room, enlarged the master bedroom, added large and easily accessed storage, transformed the storage space into an entirely new library and brought daylight to the entire second floor.

Erich is a wizard of an architect and a genuinely nice person. Our project was an attic conversion to a primary suite. He listened to what we wanted and worked with us to create an amazing space.

As the second floor neared completion the owners decided to also renovate their kitchen. while staying within the existing space we were able to create a kitchen that is better to cook in, has better style, has with better daylight and lighting, has better connections to the rest of the house, and has better storage and display.

Often times we are called upon to come up with unique solutions to problems. Below is an example of one such case where our client wanted their stand mixer easily at hand but did not want leave it out on the counter all the time nor did they want to have to lift it up to the counter from a lower cabinet. By creating a second door to the wall cabinet, we created an space to store the appliance out of sight but within easy reach.
